Poultry experts urge ‘village’ approach to control H5N1 dairy outbreak

Waiting for the H5 influenza outbreak to slow down in dairy cattle is no longer enough for the AAAP and PSA. The two groups teamed up to push for more action to help the dairy industry address its growing outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza. In PSA's Unplucked podcast "H5 Influenza Uncovered" veterinarians from both organizations discussed this topic.

Varying effects of light and darkness levels on turkey health and well-being

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on October 4, 2024

Varying periods of light and dark can affect turkeys’ health and well-being, including their eye health, level of fearfulness and mortality, according to a study led by Allison Pullin, PhD, animal welfare professor at North Carolina State University.

Eggshell translucency helps assess egg quality

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on October 3, 2024

Eggshell translucency is linked to several hatching-egg quality parameters but not egg specific gravity or eggshell color, according to a recent study published in Poultry Science.

Predictive tool rapidly identifies Salmonella field isolates with vaccine origins

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on October 2, 2024

Researchers from the University of Minnesota found evidence of S. Typhimurium vaccine origins persisting in commercial poultry production through processing and developed a tool to rapidly determine if a field isolate is of vaccine origin and not a concern to human health.

‘Deep serotyping’ providing new roadmaps for managing Salmonella in poultry

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on October 1, 2024

Traditional methods to detect Salmonella in poultry and trace outbreaks often fail to give the full picture of the threat in enough time for integrators to act. This lack of oversight limits the effectiveness of intervention strategies designed to mitigate Salmonella transmission.

Evolving gel technology shows promise for vaccinating chicks, poults

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on September 27, 2024

A new vaccine-application approach shows advantages to help make on-farm, day-of-age vaccination easier to perform while increasing effectiveness.

Four factors to select ideal poultry-house lighting systems

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on September 26, 2024

Lighting, among other factors like feeding and ventilation, plays a critical role in the growth and behavior of poultry and should be given careful consideration. Gabrielle House, PhD, ONCE by Signify, discusses the four main factors to consider when selecting which light source is best for your poultry house.

Bacterial litter-amendment impact on gangrenous dermatitis, ammonia levels for turkeys

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on September 25, 2024

Gangrenous dermatitis is a major commercial turkey-production disease, causing significant economic losses annually from increased bird deaths and condemnations at the processing plant. Can a litter amendment impact the spread of this bacteria?

Campylobacter hepaticus emerges as new threat to pasture-raised chickens

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on September 19, 2024

The pathogen that caused spotty liver disease (SLD) in chickens from the 1950s to 1980s is re-emerging as a threat to poultry. Since 2018, Campylobacter hepaticus has been identified in laying birds in Iowa, Florida, Georgia and worldwide.

Fairchild: Improve brooding environment for optimal performance, full genetic potential of broilers

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on September 17, 2024

Research is uncovering new opportunities to optimize the brooding period for broilers. Brian Fairchild, PhD, University of Georgia, highlighted three key opportunities in a presentation at the 2024 PEAK conference, sponsored by Midwest Poultry Foundation.

Managing lighting and emissions for more sustainable poultry production

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on September 17, 2024

The poultry industry is less resource-intensive than other forms of animal agriculture, yet sustainability practices are crucial within the industry to address environmental concerns, particularly greenhouse gas emissions.

Poultry scientist: Don’t overlook nutrition’s role in building a robust immune system

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on September 15, 2024

Is diet the rising X factor for optimizing immunity in poultry? Researchers at the Southern Poultry Research Group (SPRG) in Athens, Georgia, are building a strong case, via a growing body of research shedding new light on how diet influences the traditional pathogen-host-environment triangle for assessing disease risk.
