Lameness and gait assessment of poultry

Lameness in poultry, characterized by impaired mobility or abnormal gait, is a major concern in fast-growing birds such as broilers and turkeys. Intensive genetic selection for rapid body weight gain and increased breast muscle mass can result in disproportionate growth between the muscular and skeletal systems, predisposing birds to locomotor problems. Stephanie Kulbacki, University of Georgia, provides an overview of lameness and ways to assess gait.

Predictive tool rapidly identifies Salmonella field isolates with vaccine origins

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on October 2, 2024

Researchers from the University of Minnesota found evidence of S. Typhimurium vaccine origins persisting in commercial poultry production through processing and developed a tool to rapidly determine if a field isolate is of vaccine origin and not a concern to human health.

Vaccines strengthen turkey coccidiosis rotation programs

As resistance continues to erode the effectiveness of traditional anticoccidial programs in turkeys, veterinarians are increasingly focused on strategies that protect birds while preserving available tools. A multi-year field experience with a US heavy tom producer suggests that coccidiosis vaccines can play a practical role in conventional rotation programs.
