Lameness and gait assessment of poultry

Lameness in poultry, characterized by impaired mobility or abnormal gait, is a major concern in fast-growing birds such as broilers and turkeys. Intensive genetic selection for rapid body weight gain and increased breast muscle mass can result in disproportionate growth between the muscular and skeletal systems, predisposing birds to locomotor problems. Stephanie Kulbacki, University of Georgia, provides an overview of lameness and ways to assess gait.

How does visual perception of laying hens affect resource usage in cage-free housing?

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on June 19, 2023

Geneticists have been trying, with little success, to determine and select egg layer strains that will perform well in cage-free production systems because there are numerous unknown factors which influence a hens’ performance.

Researchers evaluate effects of heat stress in turkey poults

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on June 19, 2023

Many turkey poults may experience poor starting performance for reasons that are not well understood. Turkey flocks may even suffer mortalities up to 3% within the first three weeks of life.

Broiler diets low in crude protein may get boost from individual nonessential amino acid supplementation

sspiegel0120@gmail.com on June 16, 2023

A new study led by poultry scientists at the University of Hohenheim suggests it is possible to reduce crude protein in broiler diets while still encouraging bird growth.

Smart use of chemical anticoccidials means there’s no need to fear resistance

Turkey producers should not avoid using chemical anticoccidial products for fear of resistance, but they do need to use them strategically. In an appearance on the Iowa Turkey Federation’s Turkey Talkshow podcast, Steven Clark, DVM, Huvepharma’s veterinary technical services manager, said new evidence suggests there is “minimal risk” with common products, providing farmers rotate when necessary.
